This week, reports in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal indicated that the United States is in discussions with Iran to give it access to billions of dollars in frozen accounts in return for an apparent Iranian promise not to advance its nuclear program further and the release of hostages. At the same time, Congress is working on bipartisan actions to counter Iran’s malign activities, including sending a letter to the President on Iran’s nuclear program that makes clear the severe consequences Iran must confront for further advances to its nuclear program; The Fight and Combat Rampant Iranian Missile Exports Act (the Fight CRIME Act) HR 3152 to extend restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program and apply additional sanctions; and the The Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum Act (the SHIP Act) HR 3774/S 1829 to target ports and refineries in China and elsewhere that process oil from Iran—the main sources of revenue for the Iranian regime.
