The Case of the Mahmoud Khalil
ICE arrested green card holder Mahmoud Khalil. Mr. Khalil is not a pro-Palestinian activists, but rather a pro-Hamas, anti-Israel activist. Mr. Khalil was on camera handing out images of the Oct. 7th massacre, led a crowd which accosted police, and violently took over multiple buildings. He made Columbia University the most toxic school for anyone who didn't support Hamas. Many have expressed fear of unequal treatment and curbs on the right to protest and freedom of speech. Speech that disrupts the functioning of a school is not protected free speech. Speech that encourages violence or involves vandalism, destruction of property, or other unlawful behavior is not protected free speech. Mr. Khalil's detention is a matter of conduct, not free speech. Mr. Khalil may deserve deportation because of his support for terrorism, but he also deserves due process.
